Cervical cancer remains one of the most preventable forms of cancer, and at MGM Cancer Institute, we are committed to empowering women with the knowledge and resources needed to reduce their risk. With advancements in prevention, early detection, and treatment, cervical cancer is no longer the threat it once was. In this blog, we’ll explore the importance of cervical cancer prevention, the key steps every woman should take, and how MGM Cancer Institute is helping women take charge of their health.

Understanding Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer begins in the cells of the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. It is most commonly caused by persistent infection with high-risk types of the human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is a virus that is transmitted through sexual contact, and while many HPV infections are harmless and go away on their own, certain strains can lead to cervical cancer over time.

The good news is that cervical cancer is highly preventable with regular screenings, vaccination, and healthy lifestyle choices.

Key Steps to Prevent Cervical Cancer

  • Get the HPV Vaccine
The HPV vaccine is one of the most effective tools in preventing cervical cancer. It protects against the types of HPV that most commonly cause cervical cancer. The vaccine is recommended for girls and boys between the ages of 11 and 12, but it can also be administered to individuals up to age 26 who have not received it earlier. The vaccine can significantly reduce the risk of developing cervical cancer later in life.
  • Regular Pap Smears and HPV Testing
Routine screening is a critical step in detecting cervical abnormalities before they turn into cancer. A Pap smear, also known as a Pap test, is used to collect cells from the cervix to check for precancerous or cancerous changes. HPV testing, which can be done along with a Pap smear, detects the presence of high-risk HPV strains that may cause cervical cancer.MGM Cancer Institute encourages women to begin regular screenings at age 21 and continue every three years, or as advised by their healthcare provider. Women aged 30 and above may opt for co-testing, which combines a Pap test with HPV testing and is recommended every five years.
  • Practice Safe Sexual Health
Since HPV is primarily spread through sexual contact, practicing safe sexual health can help reduce the risk of HPV transmission. Using condoms and limiting the number of sexual partners can lower the likelihood of HPV infection. It’s important to discuss sexual health openly with your healthcare provider to ensure you have the most appropriate protection.
  • Quit Smoking
Smoking is a known risk factor for cervical cancer, as it weakens the immune system’s ability to fight off infections, including HPV. Women who smoke are more likely to develop cervical cancer when infected with high-risk HPV. If you’re a smoker, quitting not only improves your overall health but also reduces your risk of cervical cancer.
  • Healthy Diet and Lifestyle
A well-balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can strengthen your immune system and promote overall health. Maintaining a healthy weight and staying physically active also play important roles in reducing your cancer risk. Avoiding alcohol or consuming it in moderation can further lower your chances of developing cervical cancer.
