FAQ

Breast Clinic procedure and care plan

All women, regardless of age, should be aware of their breast health and consider visiting a breast clinic for regular checkups. Women aged 40 and over are generally recommended to undergo annual mammograms for breast cancer screening. Women at higher risk of breast cancer may need more frequent screenings or additional tests, such as breast MRI. It’s important to discuss your individual breast health needs with a healthcare provider.

During your first visit to a breast clinic, you’ll likely undergo a breast exam and may have diagnostic tests such as mammography, ultrasound, or MRI. Depending on your age and risk factors, you may be advised to undergo additional tests or follow-up appointments. It’s also a good opportunity to discuss any concerns you may have with your healthcare provider.

A breast health specialist is a healthcare provider who specializes in the management of breast health issues, including breast cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment. Breast health specialists may include breast surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and other healthcare providers with expertise in breast health management. They work closely with patients to develop individualized treatment plans and provide ongoing support and care.

The side effects of breast cancer treatment can vary depending on the type of treatment received. Common side effects may include fatigue, nausea, hair loss, changes in appetite, and changes in mood or emotional well-being. Your doctor will provide more information on potential side effects and strategies to manage them.

Breast cancer can be cured in some cases, especially when it is caught early and has not spread to other parts of the body. However, the success of treatment depends on many factors, including the stage and type of cancer, the age and health of the patient, and the treatment options chosen. Even in cases where breast cancer is not cured, treatment can often help manage symptoms and extend life.

“Is cancer hereditary? “”All cancers are genetic but not all cancers are hereditary”” says Dr Veda Padma Priya, Senior Consultant, Breast Oncology and Oncoplasty. Yes, cancer is due to genetic changes, but that doesn’t generally mean it’s inherited.

Although cancer is common, only 5% of it is hereditary, meaning an individual has inherited an increased risk for cancer from one of their parents. This inherited risk for cancer is caused by a small change (called a mutation) in a gene, which can be passed from one generation to the next in a family. The remaining 95% is not hereditary. Most of the time, there is a confusion when people hear that cancer is caused due to genes and they assume it’ll be passed down to their children. This is not true.

Lung cancer is one of the commonest cancers and cause of cancer related deaths all over the world. Cancer can grow in your body for a long time — years — before you know it’s there. Lung cancer often doesn’t cause symptoms in early stages. While there are many factors that can increase your risk of lung cancer, smoking any kind of tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars or pipes is the biggest single risk factor. The treatment will depend on the type of lung cancer you have, where it is, how far it’s spread and many other factors.
